The concentration of calcium is an important parameter to measure in lake waters because it is an indication of the buffering capacity of the lake. The buffering capacity of any body of water refers to its ability to control changes in acidity caused, for example, by acid rain. Lakes with higher calcium levels are more likely to be able to support populations of Zebra mussels, an invasive species. Studies suggest that Zebra mussels are unlikely to become established in waters whose calcium concentration is less that about 20 mg/L, or parts per million. Using this criteria, the calcium levels found in White Lake indicate that this body of water is susceptible to the establishment of this invasive species.
